PNT LIVE commentary: Though Mary Moody openly opposes Assembly Bill 2389, ironically her (ill informed) tweets about the issues linked to AB2389 reveal the mental illness epidemic within California’s sex worker community via Moody’s reported threats (from her peers) of self harm.

On one hand, an individual looking at Mary’s tweets may consider the threats of self harm (allegedly due to the news of the legislation linked to AB2389) as a rather immature ploy (or tactic) by a group of irresponsible individuals to simply “get their way”… However from the perspective of trained mental health professionals, consistent threats of self harm within the California sex worker community point to a far larger problem (which in time, the legislation attached to AB2389 could help remedy).

It has become quite apparent (especially since the death of August Ames) that there needs to be routine mental health screening within the California sex worker community. Though the Adult Performers Actors Guild union claims to have a system in place to address sex workers’ mental health issues, the fact is a recently resigned APAG union officer reported that she felt the current officers failed to see her mental health state and systematically bullied her to the brink of suicide.

The truth is, an individual who suffers from extreme depression and who readily contemplates or threatens self harm in response to mild professional changes in their work environment should not be a sex worker to begin with.

In the eyes of the PNT LIVE team – the I.E.A.U. founder Phyllisha Anne and Assembly member Cristina Garcia are doing the absolute right thing by supporting AB2389 – as it’s time to clean up and properly regulate the American adult entertainment industry (to further legitimize the industry and remove it from the control of organized crime).

Individuals who suffer from depression and/or who contemplate self harm (suicide even) should NOT embark on a career as a sex worker to begin with (or remain within the adult entertainment industry). Threats of self harm in effort to halt AB2389 illustrate a psychologically immature mindset and are a sign of mass mental illness – which is in part the exact reason as to why the legislation of AB2389 needs to take effect immediately.
